Treatment Options

All orthodontic treatments work towards the same goals, creating a straight and beautiful smile for patients. With the use of corrective appliances such as retainers, aligners and braces, orthodontists are able to correct irregular bites and straighten teeth to their correct positions. In the past, orthodontics was more reserved for younger patients since it was easier to correct the orthodontic problems in children and teenagers rather than adults. Also, adults were put off by the appearance of braces. Nowadays, orthodontic treatment is right for anyone with teeth in good condition and there are different orthodontic options that are much more suitable for adults.

We offer a variety of orthodontic treatment options which you will be able to browse to see which treatment is the best option for you or for your family. Some of the treatments that we perform include traditional orthodontic treatments like braces and retainers, Invisalign, dental facial orthopedics and surgical orthodontics in some cases. Read more about these orthodontic options in this section.

Not all orthodontic options may be right for you since some treatments can take longer than others to straighten out the teeth or to align the bite correctly. For this reason, it is important to know which options are available to you but to also speak with your orthodontist to find the course of action which is right to meet your orthodontic goals.

Orthodontic Treatments

There are numerous non invasive orthodontic treatments that orthodontists use to correct the position of the teeth. The two most common methods are with the use of Orthodontic braces and retainers. In most cases, both methods must be used as they go hand in hand. However, there are some cases where only one method needs to be used. Learn more about these orthodontic treatments below.

Orthodontic Braces

The most common orthodontic treatment involves braces. Braces are used to align the teeth for that perfectly straight smile. This orthodontic treatment is made up of brackets that are basically glued to the teeth with arch wires that are strategically placed throughout the brackets. It is the job of the arch wires to place pressure on the teeth to move them into their correct position. You can read more about the different types of braces like traditional metal braces, gold braces and ceramic braces in our Types of Braces section.

Orthodontic Retainers

Another common orthodontic treatment that is used are retainers. Orthodontic retainers can be made out of plastic or stainless steel. They are typically used after one’s braces have been removed to ensure that the teeth stay in place. Basically the teeth become accustomed to staying in their place while the bone and gums surrounding the teeth get accustomed to the new position of the teeth when the retainer is worn. If the retainer is not worn, the teeth may become misaligned once again. Most orthodontists recommend that the retainer is worn at night for a long period of time.

Surgical Orthodontics

Another treatment option is surgical orthodontics. This treatment is only reserved for those who have abnormalities in their jaw which can only be corrected through the use of surgery and when functional appliances are unable to correct severe cases of malocclusion or bad bite. Those who perform surgical orthodontics are oral maxillofacial surgeons and they work hand in hand with orthodontists in order to provide the patient with the most beautiful smile and facial symmetry.

Dental Facial Orthopedics

Dental facial orthopedics is a sensitive treatment option that involves changing the shape, size and relationship of the bones that are located in the jaw and face. Orthodontists acknowledge that the overcrowding of teeth is not due to having excessive teeth but rather the fact that the facial growth has been somehow stunted. Therefore, it is the job of an orthodontist to allow the facial growth to continue in order to eliminate the problems that the patient is suffering from. Not only are the bones and jaw taken into consideration during dental facial orthopedics but so are the correct positioning of the tongue, the relationship between the lower and upper jaw and the airways.
